How Will the LGS Exam Curriculum Change Due to Coronavirus?

How will the LGS exam syllabus change because of coronavirus? Minister of National Education Ziya Selçuk made a late-breaking announcement. He stated that due to school closures caused by the coronavirus, an adjusted exam syllabus has been determined. With schools closed, students have continued their education through remote learning. As a result, the LGS exam planned for June 7, 2020, will cover only the subjects taught during the first term. Minister Selçuk confirmed that the centralized exam within the High School Entrance System will be based solely on first-term curriculum.

According to the latest news, the Science Board for Improving Measurement and Assessment Processes, convened under the leadership of Deputy Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer, reviewed the situation and issued a recommendation. In line with that recommendation, the Ministry of National Education decided that the centralized LGS exam for the 2019–2020 academic year will include questions only from topics covered through the end of the first term. Minister Selçuk reminded the public that schools were closed until April 30, 2020, because of the coronavirus and emphasized that students have been supported through remote education during the closure. He reiterated that no questions will be asked on topics that were not taught face-to-face.

The LGS Exam Will Not Be Postponed in the 2019–2020 Academic Year

The LGS exam will not be postponed in the 2019–2020 academic year. Minister Ziya Selçuk explained his reasoning: postponing the exam would increase students’ anxiety. He noted that students are already facing a difficult period because of the pandemic and that the ministry does not want to raise their stress levels further. At the same time, they want to ensure students have adequate time to prepare for the exam.

Minister Selçuk said that based on current data there is no obstacle to holding the LGS exam on June 7, 2020. However, he stressed that the situation will remain under constant review and that they will follow recommendations from the Health Ministry’s Scientific Board. If necessary, another assessment could take place next week. For now, he added, there is no change to the scheduled exam date.
