The government provides additional financial support to women who must stay away from work due to maternity leave. During the legally prescribed leave period, these employees remain financially covered by the state under their employment contract. For women who are not actively working, payments are calculated over 112 days, and the minimum amount paid is currently 16,106 TL.
MATERNITY LEAVE PERIOD AND MATERNITY PAYMENT AVAILABLE!
Women employed in the public sector who need to interrupt their work for maternity leave receive state support to reduce the impact of leaving the workforce. In addition to legally sanctioned leave from the workplace, the state provides a maternity payment. Expectant mothers on approved leave can obtain a medical report for the maternity period and receive this payment while they are on leave.
HOW MUCH IS THE MATERNITY LEAVE PAYMENT?
A working woman receives payment based on her gross earnings, with minimum and maximum limits tied to the minimum wage. Following the minimum wage increase effective July 1, the maternity payment amounts were updated. Previously, a first-time working mother would receive 12,454 TL; after the minimum wage rise, the minimum maternity payment increased to 16,106 TL. This minimum amount will be paid to minimum-wage earners who complete their maternity leave through December 31.
PAYMENT INCREASES WITH NUMBER OF CHILDREN!
Maternity leave payments are calculated over a fixed period—16 weeks, which equals 112 days. The payment is computed based on the number of children; in some exceptional situations additional weeks are granted and the payment increases accordingly. For multiple births such as twins or triplets, an extra two weeks are added to the leave. Currently, the lowest payment for a single child is 16,106 TL.
HAS THE MATERNITY PAYMENT BEEN DEPOSITED?
A mother who goes on maternity leave and meets the required conditions can receive this payment after applying. The mother must have a bank account (for example at Ziraat Bank) to receive the payment; once the maternity leave period ends, the amount is deposited into that account. After applying, applicants can check whether the payment has been deposited via the e-government portal using their government login credentials.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO RECEIVE MATERNITY PAYMENT?
A woman must meet certain conditions to qualify for the maternity payment provided during maternity leave.
To be eligible for maternity payment;
- Those who leave the job before the maternity leave begins cannot benefit from this payment.
- The woman must remain insured and employed during the qualifying period.
- She must be off work for the 112 days covered by the medical report.
- The mother must have given birth and the baby must be alive.
- Submitting a medical report from the doctor to the employer is sufficient to start the process.
- Other administrative steps are typically completed quickly by the employer.
WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM MATERNITY PAYMENT AMOUNTS?
As of July, the maternity payment is calculated based on the gross minimum wage. The payments are determined from gross salary amounts. The lowest gross salary considered for calculation is 6,471 TL, which results in a maternity payment of 16,106 TL.
At the top end, a gross salary of 30,000 TL corresponds to a maternity payment of 74,667 TL.
