Turkish Statistical Institute Releases April 2020 Unemployment Figures

Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has released the unemployment figures for April 2020. According to the latest announcement, the unemployment rate for April 2020 fell by 0.2 percentage points compared with the previous period, reaching 12.8%. The number of unemployed people aged 15 and over across Turkey in April 2020 decreased by 427,000 year-on-year, totaling 3,775,000. Non-agricultural unemployment decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 14.9%.

Employment Rate for April 2020 Realized at 41.1%

The employment rate in April 2020 was 41.1%. Employed persons declined by 2,585,000 compared with the same month of the previous year, falling to 25,614,000. The employment rate dropped by 4.9 percentage points to 41.1%. By sector, employed persons decreased by 491,000 in agriculture, 209,000 in industry, 361,000 in construction and 1,524,000 in services. Among employed persons, 17.5% worked in agriculture, 20.9% in industry, 4.9% in construction and 56.7% in the services sector.

Labor Force Participation Rate for April 2020 at 47.2%

The labor force in April 2020 was 29,388,000, down by 3,013,000 compared with the same month of the previous year. The labor force participation rate fell by 5.7 percentage points to 47.2%.

Rate of Informal Employment in April 2020 at 28.7%

In April 2020, the share of workers without coverage by any social security institution declined by 5.5 percentage points year-on-year to 28.7% of total employment. In the non-agricultural sector, the share of informal employment decreased by 5.8 percentage points to 17.3%.

Unemployment and Employment Rates for Ages 15–64: 13.1% and 45.5%

For the 15–64 age group in April 2020, the unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percentage points to 13.1%, while non-agricultural unemployment decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 15.0%. The employment rate in this age group declined by 5.1 percentage points to 45.5%, and the labor force participation rate dropped by 6.0 percentage points to 52.4%.

Youth Unemployment and Employment Rates (Ages 15–24): 24.4% and 26.1%

Among young people aged 15–24, the unemployment rate rose by 1.2 percentage points year-on-year to 24.4%. The youth employment rate fell by 7.0 percentage points to 26.1%, and the labor force participation rate declined by 8.6 percentage points to 34.5%. The share of young people who are neither in education nor employment increased by 5.7 percentage points to 29.1% compared with the same month of the previous year.

Seasonally Adjusted Unemployment Rate at 13.8%, Employment Rate at 41.0%

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose by 0.7 percentage points from the previous period to 13.8%. The number of unemployed increased by 76,000 quarter-on-quarter to 4,080,000. Seasonally adjusted employment fell by 1.6 percentage points to 41.0%, with employed persons estimated at 25,541,000, a decline of 968,000.

Seasonally adjusted labor force participation decreased by 1.5 percentage points to 47.5%, and the number of people in the labor force fell by 893,000 to 29,620,000. By economic activity, seasonally adjusted employment declined by 34,000 in agriculture, 164,000 in industry, 123,000 in construction and 647,000 in the services sector.
