2020 High School Responsibility Exam Dates Postponed

The dates for the 2020 high school make-up exams have been postponed. According to an announcement from the Ministry of National Education, the scheduled make-up exams for high schools have been deferred. Deputy Minister Mustafa Safran stated that the high school make-up exams planned for June 2020 have been postponed to a later date. He added that while make-up exams had been planned for all grade levels in secondary education institutions, they will now be held on the same dates only for 12th-grade students who choose to take them.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak and the remote education that has continued since March, the academic period concluded with report cards and grade announcements on Friday, June 19, 2020. With report cards released, attention turned to the make-up exams. The deputy minister announced that the make-up exams for secondary education institutions, which had been expected to take place between June 22 and June 30, 2020, have been postponed to September 2020.

High School Make-up Exams Postponed

According to the deputy minister’s statement, the make-up exams originally planned for all grade levels in secondary education will now be applied, on the same scheduled dates, only to 12th-grade students who opt in. Students in other grades will take the make-up exams in September and will not lose any rights as a result of the postponement.

In a circular sent by the Directorate General for Secondary Education of the Ministry of National Education to provinces, it was clarified that students who are successful in all courses, and students with failed courses whose year-end achievement score is 50 or above, will be promoted directly to the next grade. Students who cannot be promoted directly to the next grade due to failing courses—regardless of how many failed subjects are involved—will be allowed to advance to the next grade as “responsible” (sorumlu) students without course-specific restrictions, provided they meet the conditions set by the regulations.

  • Make-up exams are administered within the first week of the term following the academic year according to written or practical exam procedures applied during the school year. Exams are conducted by two subject teachers; if there is only one subject teacher available, that teacher may administer the exam with the required conditions.
  • Students who fail year-end skill-based exams will take the corresponding make-up exams as written or practical exams, and their work portfolios will not be taken into account for these make-up exams.
  • A student’s responsibility for a course is removed when the student passes the make-up exam for that course.
  • If a make-up exam result is contested, the provisions of Article 49 of the applicable regulation are applied to handle objections.

At the start of the next academic year, following the make-up exam administered at the beginning of the year, a final-year student who remains failing in only one course will be given one additional exam the following week using the same procedures.
