You can check life insurance policy details and potential payouts through e-Devlet and pursue recovery, but e-Devlet does not itself issue payments. The platform only displays insurance records registered to the individual—such as policy contents, outstanding premiums, and compensation amounts—and does not directly handle disbursement of funds.
At one time a false claim circulated online suggesting that people could cancel or withdraw life insurance funds taken out when obtaining loans via the e-Devlet system. There is no such functionality: e-Devlet only provides access to information and a channel for complaints, it does not unilaterally cancel policies or return money.
What is Life Insurance?
Life insurance is one of the long-standing insurance types in Turkey. It is a policy designed to provide financial support to the insured or their heirs in the event of unforeseen circumstances. While often encountered in connection with bank loans, life insurance is distinct from private pension plans and health insurance, even though it may include wide-ranging coverages.
Often described as a form of savings insurance, life policies are structured to compensate financial losses arising from death, temporary loss of work, disability, accidents, and illnesses. If specified in the contract, the policy can also serve as an investment vehicle, allowing for a lump-sum payment at the end of the term.
Insurance companies issue life policies in exchange for premiums. These contracts outline a set of covered risks for the duration of the policy in return for the agreed premium payments.
What Does Life Insurance Do?
The main purpose of life insurance is to provide financial security against adverse events. It covers the financial impact of death, accidents, unemployment, or illness so the insured and their family are protected from the economic consequences of such events.
Common coverages in life insurance policies include:
- Compensation for income loss caused by accident, illness, or disability
- Lump-sum payment to heirs in the event of death due to accident, illness, or natural causes
- Payment of loan, credit card, or utility debts in the event of involuntary unemployment
- Coverage of medical expenses arising from accidents or illnesses
- Coverage for diagnosis and treatment costs of life-threatening illnesses
- Daily compensation payments for accident, illness, or loss of work
- Lump-sum return of accumulated savings at the end of the policy if the insured risks do not occur

How to Check Life Insurance via e-Devlet
To query life insurance information on e-Devlet, you must have an e-Devlet account and password. Once logged in, use the search box to access the Insurance Information and Monitoring Center (Sigorta Bilgi ve Gözetim Merkezi) service titled “Hayat Sigortası Poliçe ve Tazminat Bilgileri Sorgulama.” The system then generates a report of all insurance transactions registered under the individual’s identity, showing policy details, outstanding premiums, contract end dates, and any compensation amounts.
Can Life Insurance Be Canceled via e-Devlet?
You cannot directly cancel a life insurance policy via e-Devlet. However, you can submit a complaint through the platform using the “Sigortacılık ve Özel Emeklilik Şikâyet Başvuru ve Takibi” page to request investigation or suspension. Complaints submitted there are forwarded to the Insurance and Private Pension Regulation and Supervision Authority (SEDDK) and the insurance company. Filing a complaint does not automatically cancel the policy or trigger premium refunds; an investigation and potential objections from the insurer must be completed first. If the review finds in favor of cancellation, the policy may be canceled and premiums refunded.
Alternatively, you can apply directly to the insurance company that issued the policy. A written request (petition) is typically sufficient to request cancellation. For life insurance taken out to secure a loan, the consumer’s right of withdrawal (cayma hakkı) may apply. It is important to note that if the policy is canceled and premiums refunded, heirs could become responsible for outstanding loan debts that the insurance would otherwise have covered. Insurers cannot impose heavier obligations at the time of withdrawal than those agreed initially.
Can You Receive Life Insurance Money from e-Devlet?
There is no process through which e-Devlet pays out life insurance money. Some citizens misunderstood news and assumed e-Devlet or the Insurance Information and Monitoring Center could disburse funds. That center’s role on e-Devlet is to enable users to access information and submit complaints quickly; it does not have authority to make payments. Through the system you can report problems and learn about remaining premium days, contract end dates, and any compensation entitlements.
Can You Receive Life Insurance Compensation via e-Devlet?
You cannot receive life insurance compensation through e-Devlet. The platform only provides policy data such as end dates and the amount of compensation entitlement. If there is a dispute, complaints can be filed there. The correct path for claiming life insurance money is as follows:
- Apply to the bank or insurer that issued the life insurance.
- Submit a written request stating you are claiming the life insurance compensation.
- If the bank refuses, apply to the Consumer Arbitration Committee (Tüketici Hakem Heyeti).
- The Consumer Arbitration Committee is typically located in the district governor’s (kaymakamlık) office.
- Committees accept and examine cases for premium recovery during specific periods announced each year.
- Follow the official announcements in the Official Gazette to submit applications within the designated timeframe.
How Is Life Insurance Money Calculated?
The amount payable from a life insurance policy depends on the policy terms and the premiums paid. Accumulated sums and any contractually agreed interest determine the payout amount, which can be paid to the insured or the designated beneficiary.
Insurance companies typically protect paid premiums against inflation by applying the interest rate specified in the policy. If premiums were paid continuously and no claim-triggering events occurred, the full amount plus agreed interest is returned at the end of the contract. If there were gaps in payment or suspended premium periods, those portions are deducted from the payout.
The Insurance Company Won’t Return My Life Insurance Money — What Should I Do?
There are cases where insurers refuse to refund life insurance premiums. First, review the signed policy contract carefully to see whether the insurer’s refusal is justified under the agreed terms. If all contractual conditions are met and the insurer still refuses to refund, file a complaint with the Consumer Arbitration Committee in your district governor’s office. These committees review disputes and often rule in favor of the consumer when the claim is valid.
In addition, citizens who cannot obtain their life insurance money can lodge complaints through e-Devlet via the Insurance Information and Monitoring Center’s page. If you do not use e-Devlet, you may also contact the Insurance Information and Monitoring Center through their official channels to seek assistance.
