Academic Staff Salaries in 2017: What Will They Earn?

After the nationwide rise in inflation and the announcement of public servant salary adjustments, the increase rates for academic staff salaries and the resulting pay levels for 2017, including the associate professor (doçent) salary for 2017, have been finalized.

3% INCREASE TO BE APPLIED

A 3% salary increase effective from January 1, 2017 will be applied to academic personnel salaries and reflected in the payments they receive on January 15, 2017. Any salary difference for the period January 1–14 will be paid separately.

Following this increase, the academic staff salaries for 2017 are as follows:

– Educational Planning Staff: 4,014 TL

– Translators: 4,256 TL

– Specialists and Lecturers: (amount not specified)

– Instructors: 4,278 TL

– Research Assistants: 0–3 years of service: 4,015 TL; 3–6 years: 4,076 TL; more than 6 years: 4,114 TL

– Assistant Professors (Yardımcı Doçent): 6–9 years of service: 4,436 TL; more than 9 years: 4,416 TL

– Associate Professors (Doçent): 9–12 years of service: 4,572 TL; 12–15 years: 4,586 TL; more than 25 years: 5,478 TL

– Professors (less than 2 years): 6,379 TL

– Professors (2 years): 6,386 TL

– Professors (3 years): 7,300 TL

– Professors (at least 4 years): 7,349 TL

– Vice Deans, Vocational School Directors (Professors with at least 3 years): 7,448 TL

– Vice Rectors, Deans (Professors with at least 3 years): 7,546 TL

– Rector: 8,101 TL

As shown, professor, associate professor and assistant professor salaries vary according to length of service, and the increases were applied based on those service periods.

– Family allowance calculations assume the individual is single and has no children.

– For the personal income tax relief (minimum living allowance), the amount used in calculations corresponds to the 2016 rate for single employees with no children.

– For those who benefit from revolving fund budgets, fixed revolving fund payments have been included in the salary calculations.

– While the Education-Teaching Allowance is included in the calculation, the Development Allowance and Academic Incentive Allowance are not included.

– The mandatory private pension (BES) premium deduction that began to be applied was not included in these calculations.

– For those whose stated service time appears shorter than eight years, it was assumed they began work on or after September 30, 2008.

– Estimated starting points for service length and the achievable grade/step were determined approximately for the purpose of these calculations.
