Education Minister Comments on 2023 Teacher Appointments — Will New Placements Happen?

The long-awaited statement about teacher appointments was made by Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer. In the aftermath of the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquake, the country endured difficult times and many processes were disrupted. Minister Özer, who made important evaluations following the earthquake, said that new appointments could be made if needed.

STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTRY ON TEACHER APPOINTMENTS

Details about teacher appointments for 2023 have been clarified. After the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquake, Minister Özer said that education and training in 10 provinces had been suspended until March 1, and that assessments would not be made at the provincial level but rather at the district and school levels.

Regarding teacher appointments, Minister Özer stated that new appointments will be made if there is a need. He emphasized that appointments and assignments will cover whatever is necessary for education and training. He also said they will begin processes this week to reassign teachers from the affected region to other provinces where needed.

DAMAGE ASSESSMENT REPORTS FOR ALL SCHOOLS AWAITED

Minister Özer clarified that they did not state education would resume on March 1, but that activities were paused until that date. He stressed they will not restart schooling until damage assessment reports for all schools are received. It was reported that, among the earthquake-affected provinces, 23 school buildings were destroyed and 83 sustained heavy damage.

WILL YKS AND LGS BE POSTPONED?

Following rumors about the YKS and LGS exams, Minister Özer commented that no exam dates have been announced. He said exam schedules will be determined based on conditions. He noted that the second term is excluded from the scope of the LGS and YKS considerations and that new dates for the LGS will be announced later. The ministry is working to create suitable conditions so students can recover from earthquake-related trauma as much as possible.
