Fertilizer, Land, Fuel and Tractor Support from the Government for Kiwi Growers

Government grants for producers have risen significantly. These supports offer major advantages for those who want to start a new business or expand an existing agricultural enterprise. Recently, kiwifruit growers in particular have been receiving substantial government assistance.

Major Support for Kiwifruit Growers

State grant programs continue to be available for people planning to start new ventures or expand current operations. Agriculture and Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli recently announced support measures specifically for kiwifruit cultivation. Speaking in Yalova as part of a program, the minister emphasized that the growth of kiwifruit production in Yalova over recent years should serve as a model for other regions and highlighted the significant state-backed supports available for kiwifruit producers.

The minister stated: “Global kiwi production is around 4 million tons. In Turkey, kiwifruit is produced on approximately 31 thousand decares, and the country ranks among the world’s notable producers. It is important to emphasize that kiwifruit production has increased roughly 30-fold over the last 18 years.”

Pakdemirli also described the current support programs available to kiwifruit farmers: “Producers receive fuel and fertilizer support of 19 lira per decare. In addition, we provide 10 lira per decare for solid organic fertilizer and agricultural support ranging from 20 to 40 lira per decare.

New orchard establishment is also supported. For orchards planted with standard saplings, the support is 100 lira per decare, while the use of certified saplings receives 280 lira per decare. Under the small family farm support scheme, an additional 100 lira per decare is provided.”

Support for Processing and Marketing

Kiwifruit cultivation also benefits from grants for processing, marketing and storage. “So far, 29 projects have received grant support—13 cold storage facilities and 16 processing and packaging projects—totaling 8.2 million lira,” the minister said.

Additionally, Ziraat Bank and agricultural credit cooperatives offer low-interest investment and working capital loans to support kiwifruit producers and the sector. Farmers are also supported against natural disasters within the TARSİM insurance framework, with the state covering 50% of premiums. Support amounts increase when producers are women or young people.

“I encourage young people and women to engage in kiwifruit cultivation. A modest investment on a 10-decare plot can generate income up to six times the monthly minimum wage for up to 30 years,” he added, underscoring the crop’s potential.

How to Grow Kiwifruit

Climate conditions are the most important factor for growing kiwifruit. Although it is a subtropical fruit, kiwifruit does not thrive in every climate. While reasonably frost-tolerant, it can be severely damaged by excessively high temperatures. Regions with moderate temperatures—neither very hot nor very cold—produce the best yields.

In Turkey, the Black Sea and Marmara coastal zones provide particularly suitable conditions for kiwifruit cultivation. Production is also possible in parts of the Aegean and Mediterranean regions at elevations up to about 200 meters above sea level. Coastal Mediterranean areas, however, are often too hot for successful production. After planting, kiwifruit vines typically start bearing fruit at four years of age and reach optimal yields after about seven years.
