The Republic of Turkey seeks various methods to relieve citizens who have tax debts and to ensure taxes are collected completely. In addition to programs administered by the Ministry of Finance’s Revenue Administration, a range of online services have been introduced that allow citizens to check tax debt online, pay taxes by credit card, and apply for debt restructuring. The most commonly preferred and effective option is restructuring. A restructured debt is arranged by agreeing with the taxpayer and dividing the payable amount into manageable monthly installments.
Restructuring enables debtors who cannot pay their accumulated debts in full at once to pay in monthly installments, while the state secures collection of outstanding debts. Checking the status of a restructured debt is a crucial step in the process. You can query a restructured debt using your Turkish ID number through the e-Government portal or the Revenue Administration website. Both methods are straightforward and can be completed in a few simple steps once the ID number is known.
How to Check Restructured Debt via the e-Government Portal
Before benefiting from government relief and applying for restructuring, you should first determine the total outstanding debt. To use the e-Government portal:
- Go to the nearest PTT branch.
- Obtain an e-Government password for 2 TL using your ID number.
- Access the e-Government portal through its mobile app or website.
- Log in with your Turkish ID number and the password obtained from PTT.
- After logging in, go to the e-services section and click the Revenue Administration link for “restructured debt”.
- Once inside the Revenue Administration area, select the tax debt inquiry option from the subservices to view your debt details.
How to Check Restructured Debt on the Revenue Administration Website
The Revenue Administration (GİB) set up the Internet Tax Office to provide faster services to citizens. Through this system you can view all tax liabilities and social security (SGK) debt, and you can also learn and pay restructured debts. To check a restructured debt via the Internet Tax Office, follow these steps:
- Open the Internet Tax Office section.
- Select the debt information service on that page.
- Carefully read the warnings in the debt information section and proceed to the login page with your Turkish ID number and required information.
- Have your identity card with you, since personal identity details such as ID serial, identity number, or card number may be requested.
- Enter the letters from your mother’s maiden name as the password, then proceed to the inquiry page to view both current debts and restructured debt status.
What Other Transactions Are Available on Pages for Checking Restructured Debt?
On the e-Government and Revenue Administration sites where you check restructured debt, you can also view other liabilities. On the tax inquiry pages you can see restructured debts, vehicle taxes, vehicle fines, administrative fines, and fees. To see comprehensive information, click the “all” section at the bottom of the page. After selecting “all,” choose the tax office and tax type on the screen that opens to access details for any kind of tax liability or restructured debt.
What Does Debt Restructuring Cover and How Is the Restructured Debt Checked?
Restructuring covers a wide range of obligations — from SGK premium debts and traffic fines to customs duties — and is handled by the Revenue Administration under the Ministry of Finance. To proceed with restructured debt inquiries, the debts must first be restructured. Debts can be divided into installments of 6, 9, 12, or 18 months. In addition to installment plans for the principal debt, restructuring may include removal of certain past penalties and other adjustments depending on the regulations in force.
How to Apply for Debt Restructuring and Then Check the Restructured Debt
The first step for citizens is to identify the amount of SGK premiums or tax debt they owe. After learning the debt amount, the person should go to the relevant tax office. The Ministry of Finance generally sets a specific application period for restructuring. Applications must be submitted to the Tax Office within the designated period. Applications can be made directly with a petition or by postal mail. Citizens who cannot apply by petition or mail may apply online. Online application is completed in a few steps using the Turkish ID number and identity information. Shortly after the application is submitted, you can check the status of the restructured debt through the inquiry system.
How to Check and Apply for Restructuring Online
Both checking restructured debt and submitting restructuring applications can be done online. To begin an online tax restructuring application, open the Revenue Administration’s official website. On the Internet Tax Office’s landing page, log in with your identity information and click the section related to debts to open the application form. Complete the required information about the debt and the taxpayer in the form to submit a restructuring request. The form asks which debts you want to restructure, the tax office responsible, the province of that tax office, and the number of installments you prefer. After confirming that you have read and accepted the terms, submit the application. Once completed, the debt is considered restructured. For faster access to restructuring status and other services, citizens can also install the Revenue Administration’s mobile app (GİB Mobile) on their smart devices.
