2020 LGS: For the First Time, Students Will Take the Exam at Their Own Schools

The 2020 LGS exam will introduce a first: every student will take the test at their own school. The long-awaited announcement regarding the High School Entrance Exam (Liselere Geçiş Sınavı, LGS) was made last night. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that the exam, which had been under consideration, has been postponed and is planned to take place on June 20, 2020.

Families and students waiting for clarity now have a date to prepare for: if no further changes occur, the 2020 High School Entrance Exam will be held on June 20. With this announcement, eighth-grade students who will sit for the LGS have begun preparing for the scheduled date. During this period they will continue with distance learning. President Erdoğan confirmed that the exam will take place on June 20, 2020.

2020 LGS Exam Locations: Students Will Use Their Own Schools

According to the latest statement from Minister of National Education Ziya Selçuk, students who will take the 2020 LGS will sit for the exam at their own schools. Minister Selçuk discussed both the LGS and the university entrance exam (YKS) during a television interview, explaining that decisions were made in consultation with many institutions. He noted that the Ministry is implementing measures for the LGS while the Higher Education Council (YÖK) is taking steps for the YKS.

Minister Selçuk emphasized that each student will take the exam in their familiar school environment rather than in an unknown school or neighborhood. He explained that holding the exam at students’ own schools aims to create a calmer, more comfortable atmosphere. He also stated that this arrangement represents a first for the LGS and that detailed exam information will be shared via the e-Okul system.

Health and safety measures will be implemented at exam centers. Facilities will be disinfected and students will be provided with masks. This year there will be no requirement to present a photo ID specifically for the LGS; the rule for a photo ID will not be enforced for this exam.

Details regarding seating arrangements will be finalized in the coming days. Minister Selçuk noted that the Scientific Board is working on a scenario and that decisions will be made with their guidance. He reassured that precautions are being taken to prevent problems and to protect health conditions, and that all measures will be informed by consultation with the Scientific Board.
