Breaking News: Updated Cigarette Prices After Tax Increase — As of July 8, 2020, cigarette retail prices have been updated. The automatic adjustment to the special consumption tax (ÖTV), applied every six months, has been implemented. With the most recent six-month automatic ÖTV increase, the tax burden on cigarettes rose from 85% to 86%. Following this change, a price floor of 14.50 TL has effectively been established for cigarette packs. Because a 15.25% VAT is also applied to the sale price, a cigarette pack priced at 14.50 TL includes 2.21 TL in VAT. With these rates, the total tax taken from a single pack reaches 12.46 TL.
According to the Revenue Administration’s adjustment, the cigarette tax rose by 1.1 TL, increasing the tax rate from approximately 84% to 86%. After this increase, the price of a pack of cigarettes has risen from at least 13.60 TL to 14.50 TL. Important developments regarding cigarette price adjustments continue in July. As a result of the regulation, the ÖTV collected per cigarette in a pack increased by 6.89%.
Thus, a price barrier at 14.50 TL has been created. Because VAT of 15.25% is charged on the sale price, a pack sold for 14.50 TL contains 2.21 TL of VAT. Consequently, the total tax taken from a single pack reaches 12.46 TL. With this tax rise, the overall tax burden on cigarettes in Turkey moved from 85% to 86%. The minimum specific tax on cigars, previously 0.3506 TL, rose to 0.3747 TL, while the fixed specific tax increased from 0.4686 TL to 0.5008 TL.
