Mask Fine in Istanbul Announced: Penalties for Not Wearing a Mask

The Fine for Not Wearing a Mask in Istanbul Is Announced

In breaking news, the fine for not wearing a mask across Istanbul has been determined. Previously, enforcement and fines for not wearing masks were left to district governorships, resulting in differing penalties from one district to another. Under the new decision, however, the administrative fine for not wearing a mask anywhere in Istanbul has been set at 900 TL.

Across Turkey, mask mandates were introduced in 48 provinces due to the coronavirus. The Istanbul Governorship has now specified the penalty it will apply to citizens who do not wear masks. When local authorities previously set fines, amounts could reach roughly 3,150 TL in some areas. Those penalties varied by district. For example, in Beşiktaş the practice had been to issue warnings for three days and then impose an administrative fine of 950 TL; in Gaziosmanpaşa the figure had been around 392 TL.

Why This Enforcement Was Needed

Many residents welcome this kind of enforcement, although some remain dissatisfied or do not comply despite the penalties. Observations also show that many people who do wear masks do not use them correctly. Comments collected from people on İstiklal Street emphasized the need for consistent enforcement. Some citizens continue to wear masks improperly — for instance with the nose exposed or the mask around the chin — and only about 60% were found to be wearing masks correctly.

When asked about the mask requirement, many citizens said the enforcement is necessary and that it would encourage more people to wear masks properly. Others reported that, following the introduction of stricter measures, they have noticed an increase in mask use and believe the new enforcement is justified.

With the standardized fine of 900 TL across Istanbul, authorities aim to create uniformity in enforcement, reduce confusion among residents, and improve overall compliance with public health measures.
