The hospital was founded in 1952 as SSK Sultanahmet Hospital, serving the Surgical and Gynecology wards. From 1959 it continued operations under the name Bakırköy Maternity and Dispensary Chief Physician. On 01.05.2011, it moved to a new building in Halkalı with 544 beds and began operating under the name Istanbul Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Training and Research Hospital. It is the largest hospital in Thrace.
