How Much Is a 30-Day Insurance Premium in 2024?

Insurance premium is the contribution paid by employees and employers to the social security system. Through these premiums, workers gain access to healthcare services, unemployment benefits and retirement pensions.

Insurance premiums vary according to insured persons’ working periods, earnings and insurance categories. With the minimum wage set at 17,002 TL for 2024, insurance premiums increased. Below we explain how much a 30-day insurance premium is in 2024, how premiums are calculated and the obligation to pay them.

How Much Is One Day of Insurance Premium in 2024?

To calculate an insurance premium you need the insured person’s gross wage, insurance category and contribution rates for each insurance branch. The insurance category is determined by the form of employment.

According to Article 4 of Law No. 5510, insured persons are divided into three groups:

  • 4A: employees working for an employer,
  • 4B: self-employed persons working on their own account,
  • 4C: public servants.

Contribution rates show how the paid premium is distributed among insurance types. Insurance types are: disability, old-age and survivor insurance (MYÖS), short-term insurance branches (KVSK) and general health insurance (GSS). Contribution rates differ by insurance category.

To calculate one day’s premium in 2024 we first need the gross wage. Gross wage is the net take-home pay plus taxes and deductions.

The minimum wage for 2024 was set at 17,002 TL. The gross wage for an employee paid the minimum wage is therefore 20,002 TL. Dividing this by 30 gives the daily gross wage. One day’s gross wage is 667.33 TL.

You must also know the insurance category and branch rates. For 2024 the main rates are shown in the table below:

Insurance Category Insurance Branch Employee Share Employer Share
4A MYÖS %9 %11
4A KVSK %2 %6.5
4A GSS %5 %7.5
4B MYÖS %20
4B GSS %10
4C MYÖS %9 %11
4C GSS %5 %7.5

Using these percentages, the one-day insurance premium is calculated as follows for each category.

What Happens If an Insurance Premium Is Paid Late?

Insurance contributions must be paid within the periods set by SGK. Late payment creates a premium debt and triggers late payment fines and interest. Outstanding premium debt also negatively affects access to social security rights.

Insured persons with premium debt;

  1. cannot access healthcare services,
  2. cannot apply for retirement,
  3. are not eligible for unemployment benefits,
  4. cannot claim severance pay.

Employers with premium debt;

  1. cannot benefit from SGK incentives and discounts,
  2. cannot use tax reductions,
  3. cannot participate in public tenders,
  4. may face enforcement actions.

To avoid premium debt, payments must be made on time and in full. Those with outstanding debts can benefit from restructuring or paying in lump sum to avoid additional fines and interest.

What Happens If Insurance Premiums Are Not Paid?

Paying insurance premiums is both a legal and social responsibility for employees and employers. Timely payments ensure access to healthcare and retirement rights for individuals and support the sustainability and competitiveness of businesses. Regular premium payments contribute to individual and social welfare.

If premiums are not paid on time, debts accrue and fines and interest are applied. Premium debt restricts social security rights and creates legal and financial consequences for both insured persons and employers.
