Class A1 driving license can vary depending on whether the vehicle has two or three wheels. Holders of an A1 license are permitted to ride motorcycles that meet the class criteria.
- For two-wheeled motorcycles, the engine displacement must not exceed 125 cubic centimeters, power must not exceed 11 kilowatts, and the power-to-weight ratio must be less than 0.1 kW/kg.
- For three-wheeled motorcycles, the maximum power is set at 15 kilowatts. Applicants must be at least 16 years old.
Requirements to Obtain an A1 License
To obtain an A1 license you must be at least 16 years old. The first step is to enroll in a driving course. Required documents typically include your national ID number, proof of education (such as a student certificate if applicable), a passport-style photo, a medical report, and a document showing a clean criminal record. If you already hold a different driving license, you can bring a copy of it. 
A1 License: Training and Course Content
The initial phase of A1 motorcycle training focuses on getting to know the motorcycle, coordinating hand-eye and throttle/clutch operations, and developing balance while riding. Training also covers protective equipment and different motorcycle types before practical on-bike exercises begin. The goal is to build safe riding experience and confidence.
Protective Gear and Pre-Ride Checks
Riders with an A1 license should wear protective, close-fitting clothing while riding to reduce injury risk. Recommended items include fitted pants or riding trousers and motorcycle-appropriate boots. A certified helmet must always be worn.
Making pre-ride checks a habit helps prevent many common causes of accidents and ensures a safer ride. Before every trip, inspect fuel level, engine oil, and tires for cuts or damage. Check wheel rims, ensure the chain is lubricated, and verify there are no oil leaks. Confirm that brake and clutch pads are within safe limits. Make sure headlights, indicators, horn, and brake lights are functioning properly. Also check the battery, mirrors, and that bolts and nuts are tightened and secure.
Checking Driver License Penalty Points
A1 license holders can receive penalty points for traffic violations. Since 2016, new drivers are treated as probationary drivers for two years. Accumulating 50 penalty points within one year will invalidate the probationary license; reaching 75 points can result in losing the license. Additional infractions that can lead to probationary license cancellation include speeding violations, driving under the influence of alcohol, or running a red light three times.
The updated system and stricter rules have increased both demand for training courses and awareness among drivers. If a candidate’s license is revoked, they must undergo a psychotechnical evaluation. If the candidate passes and obtains the required certificate, they may reapply to a driving course and attempt to regain their license.
Violations That Cause Cancellation of a Probationary License
A1 license holders are also considered probationary drivers at first.
