Public Transit Now Free for Healthcare Workers: What You Need to Know

Public Transportation Is Free for Healthcare Workers! In recognition of their selfless service during the coronavirus outbreak, the President announced welcome news for healthcare workers: they will be able to use public transportation free of charge for the duration of the coronavirus measures. Previously, the President had also announced that additional payments to healthcare personnel would be made at the maximum rate for a three-month period. Following that decision, and to support the sacrifices of healthcare workers fighting the coronavirus, a Presidential Decree has been issued allowing them to use municipal and affiliated public transportation services without charge.

Free Public Transportation for Healthcare Workers Published in the Official Gazette

The decision making public transportation free for healthcare workers was published in the Official Gazette. Under this Presidential decision, healthcare personnel who are working devotedly during the coronavirus outbreak will be able to use public transportation without paying fares. The decree covering free use of public transit and publicly owned social facilities by healthcare workers was released today in the Official Gazette.

Signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the decision allows healthcare personnel who are engaged in efforts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus to benefit from free public transportation. The measure applies to healthcare employees working in all public and private health institutions and organizations during the period of efforts to contain the disease. Following approval by the relevant municipalities, it has been announced that municipal authorities and their affiliated institutions, establishments, enterprises and companies will not charge fares for public transportation services—including Başkentray, Marmaray and İZBAN operations—until May 31, 2020.
