When Will Schools Reopen? Latest Statement from Minister of Education Ziya Selçuk
Due to the coronavirus outbreak, schools had previously been closed until April 30, 2020. In a recent announcement, Minister of National Education Ziya Selçuk updated that decision: the remote education period has now been extended through May 31, 2020. Minister Selçuk also said preparations continue for remedial education programs, noting that decisions may change depending on evolving circumstances.
Minister Selçuk addressed several questions about the High School Entrance Exam (LGS). When asked whether the exam would be postponed, he said the decision will be announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan after the Cabinet meeting scheduled for early next week. Selçuk added that teams are working on seating plans based on simulations. He also provided clear answers about the promotion system between grade levels.
Remote Education Extended Through May 31, 2020
Minister Selçuk provided detailed information about school arrangements. Earlier measures had closed schools first until March 30, 2020 and then until April 30, 2020; the public had awaited further updates. Selçuk confirmed that remote education will continue until May 31, 2020. He emphasized that the Ministry has aimed to make swift and accurate decisions from the start of the pandemic response, and stressed that homes are currently the safest places. For conditions to return to normal, this period must be managed carefully. At present, remote learning remains the only viable option.
Regarding the Education Information Network (EBA) platform, Selçuk noted that students can continue their studies independently of time constraints through this system. He also said psychosocial support services are being activated across the country. The Ministry has established call centers in all 81 provinces, and guidance counselors are providing support to students and families. He described remedial education as an integral part of the overall remote learning approach and encouraged students to read widely during this time.
On the topic of LGS, Selçuk reiterated that any final decisions will be shared by President Erdoğan after the Cabinet meeting next week.
Addressing questions about grade promotion, Minister Selçuk explained that promotion decisions will be based on first-term grades. Regardless of final averages, students will advance to the next grade; first-term grades will be the reference point for promotion.
