What Is the Free Boarding and Scholarship Exam (PYBS)?

The Free Boarding and Scholarship Exam (PYBS) is a type of scholarship awarded to primary and secondary school students. It is available to students up to the age of 18 and covers those studying between fifth and eleventh grade inclusive. Eligibility depends primarily on household income: families with an annual per-person income below a specified threshold may receive the scholarship. Applicants with incomes above that limit are not eligible. One exception to the income requirement applies to children of teachers and veterans; their household income is not considered when awarding this scholarship.

The amount of the scholarship varies by grade. The only way to obtain the scholarship is to achieve a sufficiently high score on the relevant exam. For middle school students, the award is determined by the placement exam results, while students in grades 5, 9, 10 and 11 must sit specific scholarship exams organized for those grades.

PYBS Results Announced

The Ministry of National Education (MEB) announced the results of the Free Boarding and Scholarship Exams on July 18, 2017. There are two official channels to access the results: the Ministry’s main website and the designated exam portal. Students can view their results by visiting either site and entering their national ID number, date of birth (day, month and year) and the displayed security code.

Based on the Ministry’s exams, students in primary grades 5 through 8 and preparatory, 9th, 10th and 11th grade students earned the right to receive scholarships. Approximately 65,000 students were granted scholarships through the Secondary Education Institutions Scholarship exams. By law, all children of fallen soldiers (martyrs) and veterans who apply are granted the scholarship regardless of income.

The nationwide exam on June 10, 2017 was taken by 1,185,576 students. In addition to students who had previously received the scholarship, an extra quota of 65,000 places was provided by the Ministry of Finance for 2017. Combining the additional quota with the existing beneficiaries, the final distribution by grade was approximately: 24,351 fifth-grade students, 13,806 sixth-grade students, 11,497 seventh-grade students, 9,826 eighth-grade students, 42 preparatory class students, 2,632 ninth-grade students, 1,808 tenth-grade students and 1,041 eleventh-grade students awarded scholarships.

Students who qualified for the scholarship based on exam results — and those entitled to the scholarship as children of martyrs and veterans without taking the exam — will receive payments of 191 TL for the first term and 204 TL for the second term.
