How to Cancel HGS Through PTT and Banks

HGS cancellation can be completed at PTT branches, partner banks, or via e-Government (e-Devlet). When applying to cancel a Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi (HGS) account, the card or tag owner must verify identity by presenting an identity card, Turkish ID card (T.C. kimlik kartı), or driving license. If you no longer need the HGS service—which eliminates the need to wait at toll booths on toll roads and Bosphorus bridges—you can follow the PTT and bank HGS cancellation procedures outlined below.

What is HGS?

HGS is a contactless payment system used at toll bridges and highways that allows vehicles to pass without stopping at toll booths. To use the Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi, vehicle owners must obtain an HGS card or tag registered to their vehicle.

Where and How to Get HGS?

Vehicle owners have several options to obtain an HGS tag. HGS cards and tags can be issued at PTT offices, partner banks, and participating fuel stations. To apply for an HGS tag at these locations, applicants should bring:

  • Identity document,
  • Vehicle registration certificate (ruhsat).

  • On the page that opens, select the active HGS product and complete the cancellation form to submit your request to PTT without visiting a branch.

When Does HGS Cancellation Take Effect?

The HGS cancellation is effective immediately after the request is processed. Refunds of any remaining balance depend on the policies of the institution handling the cancellation and may take different lengths of time.

What Happens If You Don’t Cancel HGS?

If you do not cancel an HGS tag registered in your name, you assume a significant risk. HGS is registered to the cardholder; if you sell your vehicle without canceling the HGS tag, you remain responsible for any unauthorized or unpaid crossings and resulting fines. For this reason, canceling HGS before or immediately after selling a vehicle is important.

Is the Balance of a Cancelled HGS Refunded?

The remaining balance on a cancelled HGS card can be refunded or transferred to another HGS tag. For PTT, balance refunds typically require a 30-day waiting period. Transfers of balance to another HGS tag are processed immediately.

For banks, balance refunds are usually completed after a 10-day period following cancellation. Balance transfer procedures are similar across PTT and partner banks, and banks generally process transfer requests promptly.
