How to Close PTT and Bank Credit Cards Quickly and Securely

Postal service (PTT) and bank credit cards can be suspended or canceled. Requests to deactivate a credit card can be made not only at bank branches but also via customer service centers, internet banking or mobile banking platforms.

If the card is being closed because of an annual fee or similar charges, the process is often completed at a branch. When call centers direct customers to a branch for the procedure, a face-to-face meeting can offer certain advantages and faster resolution.

How to Cancel a PTT or Bank Credit Card

To cancel a credit card, contact the bank’s customer call center. Every cardholder has the unilateral right to terminate their card agreement. If the case is referred to a branch, the customer must inform the branch representative of the cancellation request.

The signed written request should include:

  • Personal information
  • Credit card details
  • Clear statement of the cancellation request

The request must be dated for the cancellation to be accepted and for the process to start.

Card Closure at PTT and Bank Branches

To close a PTT or bank credit card, the customer first contacts the institution’s call center. Even after submitting a verbal request, the customer may be asked to visit the nearest branch. In this stage, the clauses agreed in the signed card contract remain effective.

Can a Card with Ongoing Installment Payments Be Closed?

All practices for closing credit cards are governed by regulations issued by the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK). There is generally no restriction on submitting a request to close a card with ongoing installment payments.

  • After a closure request for PTT or other bank cards is received, the process is completed within seven business days.

Installment payments on a closed card continue while the card is closed. The issuing bank must continue to send account statements until any installment debts are fully paid.

Can Accumulated Points on a Closed Card Be Used?

Points accumulated on a credit card are not available after the card has been closed. Points should be redeemed before cancellation. Loyalty points are tracked annually and may be removed at the start of a new year if unused. For the most current information about point expiration or usage, contact the issuing bank’s call center.

What Happens to Supplementary Cards When the Main Card Is Canceled?

When the primary card is canceled, any supplementary cards are also treated as canceled. Transactions made with a supplementary card appear on the primary card’s statement, so supplementary cards cannot be used after the primary card is closed.

Is There a Fee to Cancel a Credit Card?

Current regulations do not allow banks to charge a standard credit card cancellation fee. However, contractual terms between a bank and customer may include penalties for early termination. Any penalty charged under names such as a “card cancellation penalty” will appear on the account statement in accordance with the agreement.

Temporarily Deactivating a Credit Card

In the event of loss or theft, a credit card can be temporarily blocked. Banks maintain dedicated hotlines and priority services for lost or stolen card reports. During the call, security questions are asked to verify the cardholder’s identity.

  • Information about the last transaction location and amount made with the lost or stolen card is important for security checks.

After a loss or theft report, the customer gains the right to dispute unauthorized transactions. The reported card is immediately blocked and the customer may apply for a replacement card. Customers who do not want to use a card but fail to formally cancel it may still face contractual obligations such as annual fees.

How to Cancel an Unused Credit Card

A credit card issued in a person’s name but never used can only be canceled through a formal request. Cancellation of an unused card is at the customer’s initiative and requires contacting the bank. If a used card is to be canceled, the account statement must be produced and any outstanding balance settled first. For installment purchases, the card can be closed before the remaining installment due dates, but outstanding installments must continue to be paid.

Outstanding installments must continue to be paid on schedule.

  • A card with no activity for 180 days (six months) is placed in a passive status.
  • The 180-day count applies if the card has no transactions, including PIN or ATM operations.

A passivated card is not canceled. To cancel, the cardholder must contact the bank’s call center and request cancellation with the required approvals.

Does an Unused Card Accrue an Annual Fee?

Even if a contract was signed, an unused credit card in passive status should not be charged a new annual fee. Previously charged annual fees remain as prior liabilities, but once a card enters passive status, new annual fees generally are not applied. Unused cards should not be kept indefinitely for “just in case” reasons; cancellation can be completed through PTT or via the bank’s:

  • Internet banking
  • ATMs
  • Branches
  • Mobile banking
  • Customer call centers

Closing an unused credit card is also important for security.
