The number of driver license categories, which used to be nine, has increased to 16: A1, A2, A, B1, B, BE, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, DE, M, F, G, and K. Drivers who obtained licenses before 2016 had to renew them after that year, ending the practice of lifetime licenses. Candidates who declare they will drive automatic transmission vehicles will receive training accordingly and must take the driving test in an automatic car; drivers who obtain a license limited to automatic transmission will not be permitted to drive manual vehicles. The duration of the driving test has been extended by five minutes, and candidates are allowed two stalls (stops) during the test. In this article we provide information about the E class license.
Applicants who intend to drive tractors, minibuses, passenger cars, light trucks, trucks, or buses must obtain an E class driver’s license. Candidates must be at least 22 years old and have passed their 23rd birthday. For the license exam, a primary school education is sufficient.
E Class License Renewal
Drivers who received an E class license before 1 January 2016 must renew their license under the new regulations. The renewed E class licenses are valid in approximately 80 countries. As part of renewal, candidates must confirm their health status. Holders of an E class license are required to submit a health certificate every five years.

Driver License Penalty Points Inquiry
Traffic violations are recorded as penalty points. Since 2016, all new drivers start with a provisional (probationary) license for two years. Those who accumulate 50 penalty points within one year will have their provisional license invalidated; reaching 75 points can lead to complete license loss. In addition to penalty points, drivers found speeding, driving under the influence, or running red lights three times will lose their probationary license.
The new rules have driven more applicants to driving courses and fostered greater driver awareness. If a provisional license is revoked, the candidate must undergo an evaluation (psychotechnical test) to assess psychological fitness; upon receiving a satisfactory report, the candidate may reapply to a driving school and attempt to obtain a license again.
Violations and Penalties That Lead to Provisional License Revocation
Drivers who wish to check penalty points can do so via the official e-Government (E-Devlet) portal. Another option is to query through the General Directorate of Security’s (Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü) online services. By accessing the respective portals and entering the required information, drivers can learn their current penalty point total.
Which Vehicles Can an E Class License Operate?
The E class license covers a defined set of vehicles: buses, trucks, passenger cars, minibuses, light trucks (kamyonet), and tractors. Holders of an E class license are authorized to operate these vehicle types. Applicants must be at least 22 years old to apply. To obtain an E class license, candidates must pass theoretical exams in subjects such as engine basics, traffic rules, and first aid, followed by a driving test. Candidates who already hold an A1 or F class license may be exempt from the first aid exam. Those with a B class license may have exemptions or take only the motorcycle-related portion of the exam, depending on the regulations in effect.
