The Istanbul–Sofia train service has been temporarily suspended due to the coronavirus. As part of ongoing precautionary measures, the Turkish State Railways (TCDD Taşımacılık) announced that services between Istanbul and Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, are halted until further notice. The decision follows the detection of coronavirus cases in Turkey and the escalation of nationwide protective measures.
According to the statement from TCDD Taşımacılık, the suspension of the Istanbul–Sofia line took effect on March 11, 2020. Earlier restrictions also affected international rail links: the TransAsia Express connecting Van and Tehran was previously suspended for the same reason. These steps are part of broader efforts to limit cross-border transmission and ensure public safety.
Trains Are Being Thoroughly Disinfected
All trains are undergoing enhanced cleaning and disinfection procedures. Authorities report that after each run, high-speed trains, which transport around 23,000 passengers daily, conventional trains serving roughly 45,000 passengers, Marmaray services carrying about 430,000 passengers, and Başkentray trains with approximately 39,000 daily riders receive full cleaning and disinfectant treatment. In addition to routine cleaning, extra disinfection using agents considered safe for human health is being performed every day, reflecting practices first implemented in China when the outbreak began.
While institutions across the country have implemented comprehensive measures, individual responsibility is also emphasized. Passengers and railway staff are urged to follow hygiene practices, including regular handwashing and other recommended precautions to reduce transmission risk. The Ministry of Health has prepared informational posters and videos to raise public awareness, and these materials are being used to educate both travelers and personnel about prevention steps and proper hygiene.
The railway authorities continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as conditions evolve. Passengers affected by service changes are advised to contact official railway channels for the latest information and guidance on refunds, rebooking, or alternative travel arrangements.
