Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced at the AK Party Election Manifesto and Parliamentary Candidate Presentation Meeting on April 11 that students will receive a tax exemption for phone and computer purchases. President Erdoğan stated, “For our students in higher education, we will provide a one-time tax exemption for the acquisition of mobile phones and computers.” Following this announcement, attention turned to tax-free prices for iPhone models 11, 12, 13 and 14. Below are the estimated 2023 tax-free phone and laptop prices based on the stated measures.
Which Taxes Will Be Reduced?
Taxes currently applied to all smartphones, and the components that would be removed to calculate a tax-free price, are as follows:
- Ministry of Culture fee: 1%
- TRT stamp duty: 10%
- Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV): 50%
- Value Added Tax (KDV): 18%
Based on tax-free calculations, an Apple iPhone 14 Pro 128 GB currently priced at 41,999 TL could drop to around 21,838 TL. Similarly, a Samsung Galaxy S23 128 GB, sold for about 25,999 TL, could fall to approximately 13,239 TL under the exemption.
President Erdoğan also said, “We will provide university students with 10 GB of free monthly internet access.“
