A ceremony attended by the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, marked the launch of the Smart Taxi Application at Istanbul Airport. The minister explained that with this service, passengers at Istanbul Airport will be able to summon a taxi or make a reservation through a call center and a mobile app. He added that the Smart Taxi system, which can be monitored and audited 24/7, will raise service quality to the highest levels.
At a meeting held by the Istanbul Airport Taxi Drivers Cooperative, the Entaksi application was presented. Entaksi allows airport passengers to request and reserve taxis via a call center or mobile app. Minister Ersoy described the application as a model investment for Istanbul Airport as well as for the tourism and aviation sectors. He also suggested that the concept could be adopted by other investors in the future.
Ersoy emphasized that the Smart Taxi Application is among the most modern systems worldwide. He noted that talks will continue with other taxi associations and explained that the rollout will begin with voluntary participants; if needed, legal measures would be taken to transition all taxi operators to the system.
International Demand for the System
There is international interest in the system. In a statement, the Istanbul Airport Director pointed out that Istanbul attracts as many tourists as its population and therefore the project must be highly tourist-friendly. He expressed confidence in the state’s power to act quickly against illegal operators, but added that the underlying causes that allow such activity must be removed.
