Tax Debts Under 2,000 TL Being Waived — When Will They Be Cleared?

After parliamentary discussions on debt restructuring, the package covering a total receivable of 521 billion will benefit roughly 14 million people. This announcement, which may please those awaiting a tax amnesty, indicates that 4.6 billion lira of citizens’ debts will be written off. Tax debts included in the restructuring that are still subject to litigation were reported as 181.2 billion TL. The number of tax files involved in litigation was determined as 215,511. It was stated that the estimated collection the state expects to receive from the tax debts is 43.5 billion TL.

When Will Tax Debts Under 2,000 TL Be Erased?

In addition to debts up to December 31, 2022, tax debts below 2,000 lira will also be erased. The amount the state will forgo in collections totals 4.6 billion TL. It is planned to write off all unpaid debts as of January 1, 2023, including penalties, late fees and interest, when the total owed is 2,000 TL or less.

Writing off these debts brings relief, especially for those who owe money. The tax debt amnesty also covers many other liabilities such as traffic fines, civil registry fines, military fines, toll evasion fines, customs fines, judicial fines, student loan (KYK) debts, declared base increases, cash and stock regularizations, and water bills.

Minister Announces Good News

Finance and Treasury Minister Nebati provided details about the restructuring. In his statement, the minister noted that, besides the debts to be forgiven, every effort is being made to ease the public’s burden. Nebati also signaled moves to remove interest on unpaid debts and said the restructuring aims to provide economic relief to citizens.

The minister emphasized that many restructuring measures are being implemented to facilitate businesses as well. In addition to the good news about erasing debts under 2,000 TL, he indicated an increase in the number of installments available. For debts included in the restructuring that fall under administrative fines, a 25% reduction of the receivable is applied, and extending the number of installments offers additional relief to citizens.
