Türk-İş Announces Hunger and Poverty Thresholds
According to research conducted by Türk-İş, the hunger and poverty thresholds for July 2020 have been released. The study finds that for July 2020 the hunger threshold for a family of four is 2,406.46 TL, while the poverty threshold is calculated at 7,838.62 TL. Türk-İş carries out this monthly survey to reveal workers’ living conditions and to show how price changes in basic goods affect family budgets.
Türk-İş Declares July 2020 Hunger and Poverty Limits
The July 2020 study indicates that seasonal declines in fresh fruit and vegetable prices have positively influenced household food expenses. As a result of this positive change, the daily food cost required for a balanced diet for a family of four decreased by 0.80 TL. For July 2020, the monthly food expenditure necessary for a healthy, balanced and sufficient diet for a family of four — the hunger threshold — is set at 2,406.46 TL. The poverty threshold, which covers food plus mandatory expenditures such as clothing, housing, transportation, education, health and similar needs, is determined as 7,838.62 TL. The cost of living for a single worker is calculated at 2,919 TL per month.
In Ankara, the minimum monthly food expenditure required for a family of four decreased by 1.01% compared with the previous month. Price increases during the first seven months of 2020 reached 11.27%. Food inflation over the last 12 months is measured at 15.96%, while the annual average increase rate is calculated at 12.47%.
