Employment Terminations Banned for 3 to 6 Months Under Coronavirus Measures
Many workers and employers have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Maintaining social distance is crucial to prevent the spread of the virus. The measures and new restrictions introduced nationally and globally aim to end the outbreak with as few losses and as little damage as possible, and to help life return to normal as quickly as possible. At the same time, it is important that some businesses continue operating so people can keep earning a living. For this reason, the government has prepared and offered multiple support packages.
Recently, a new legislative proposal prepared as a precaution has been presented to representatives of the business community. According to this proposal, dismissals are prohibited for a three-month period under coronavirus measures. If deemed necessary, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan may extend this period up to six months. Employers may place employees on unpaid leave if they wish. During the leave period, employees will receive a daily cash payment of 39.24 TL. This payment will also be made to employees who were dismissed after March 15, 2020, and who are not eligible for unemployment benefits. The draft bill containing these provisions has been submitted to business organizations for their views.
