TÜİK Warns: Unemployment Rose by 62,000 in January

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) released new data for last December. The announced unemployment figures for December drew attention due to an increase. According to the Household Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed people aged 15 and over rose notably compared to December 2022.

Data show an increase of around 62 thousand people for the period, a change that is being closely monitored. Following the rise in total unemployment, interest in upcoming period data has already grown. The increases revealed in TÜİK’s December 2022 labour statistics have caused concern.

TÜİK UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES ANNOUNCED

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) announced labour statistics for December 2022. According to the Household Labour Force Survey, the unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage point to 10.3%. The unemployment rate was 8.2% for men and 14.4% for women.

The survey indicates that the number of unemployed people aged 15 and over increased by 62 thousand compared with the previous month, reaching 3,633,000 in December 2022. Seasonally adjusted unemployment rates and youth unemployment rates adjusted for seasonal effects were also published.

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED UNEMPLOYMENT RATE REVEALED

TÜİK data show the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate at 4.8%*.[Note: original percentage seemed inconsistent; retained reported figure contextually.] The number of employed persons increased by 18 thousand from the previous month to 31,573,000 in December 2022. The employment rate stayed unchanged at 48.5%.

YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AT 18%

The seasonally adjusted youth unemployment rate reached 18%. For the 15–24 age group, unemployment rose by 1.0 percentage point from the previous month, reaching 18.9%. In this age group, the estimated unemployment rate was 15.4% for males and 25.4% for females. Overall unemployment rates showed an increase across the board.
