After the 48-hour curfew, other coronavirus measures remain in effect across Turkey. The nationwide curfew, which began at 00:01 on April 10, 2020, following an announcement on the evening of April 10, lasted for 48 hours and ended at 00:01 on April 12, 2020. This temporary restriction applied to 30 metropolitan provinces and Zonguldak. Although the short-term curfew has concluded, many other coronavirus-related restrictions and precautions continue to be enforced nationwide.
The measures that remain in force after the curfew are intended to limit transmission while allowing essential services and controlled movement. The main measures still in place across Turkey are summarized below.
Curfew for Over-65 and Under-20 Age Groups Still in Effect
The existing restrictions on people aged 65 and over and those aged 20 and under remain in force. Exceptions exist for certain groups: public and private sector employees aged 18–20 and seasonal agricultural workers are permitted to leave home when they can present proper documentation. Specific rules and documentation requirements apply to these exceptions.
For children under 20 with special needs—such as autism, severe intellectual disability, or Down syndrome—limited outdoor activity is allowed under parental supervision. Parents must carry documentation or medical reports that confirm their child’s condition. These children are permitted to go outside, visit parks and gardens, and travel within provincial borders by vehicle, provided precautions are observed.
Grocery Stores and Small Markets Continue Operating
Local markets and small grocery stores will continue to serve the public. Large supermarkets will remain open from 09:00 to 21:00. To reduce crowding, supermarkets must limit the number of customers inside at any one time to one-tenth of the store’s floor area; each store must post the maximum permitted customer count at its entrance. Customers waiting to enter should maintain at least one meter of distance from one another.
Intercity Bus Services Continue with Governorship Permission
Intercity bus services will continue to operate only with permission from the provincial governorship. Travelers who must move between provinces can apply for a Travel Permit Document. Approved applicants will receive an authorization that specifies the travel route and duration.
Within provinces and districts, public transport vehicles will be allowed to carry only 50% of the passenger capacity stated on the vehicle registration. Seating arrangements must be organized to minimize physical contact among passengers.
Market Stall Spacing Set at 3 Meters
Open-air market areas will remain open for the sale of basic food items, cleaning supplies, clothing, and toys, but will operate under strict distancing rules. Stalls must be spaced at least 3 meters apart. Fresh fruits and vegetables will not be handled directly by customers; vendors must pre-package produce for sale to avoid direct contact.
Restaurants, bakeries, and similar establishments may continue to provide service only via takeaway or delivery; customers will not be allowed to sit and eat on the premises, and seating areas must be removed. Barber shops and hair salons will remain temporarily closed under the current restrictions.
