Are Courthouses Reopening? Dates and What to Expect

Have the courthouses been scheduled to reopen? One of the measures taken against the coronavirus was the temporary closure of courthouses and courtroom buildings. Many trials were postponed to later dates as a result. As normalization efforts began, people started to wonder when various public services would reopen, and reopening of the courthouses became a particular point of interest. When will courthouses, courts, and enforcement offices resume operations? This question became widely asked.

Courthouses were among the locations closed as part of measures against COVID-19. Courtrooms, which host hundreds of people daily, were shut and scheduled hearings were deferred. With the normalization process underway, the public has awaited announcements on when closed courts will reopen and which postponed hearings will be scheduled. According to the normalization plan prepared by the Ministry of Health, courthouses are expected to reopen around mid-June 2020. Postponed enforcement cases will begin to be heard from that date onward.

How Are Trials Conducted While Courthouses Are Closed?

With courthouses closed because of the coronavirus, many hearings cannot take place and decisions on pending matters may be delayed. Minister Gül announced that preparations had begun to enable hearings to be held via video. Under the Criminal Procedure Code, when a detention review is mandatory, detainees participate in hearings through the SEGBİS (video conference) system.
