After completing university education in their chosen field, people enter the workforce and begin careers in either the public or private sector. On the employee’s first day, the employer initiates insurance registration procedures. The employer must submit certain documents and the employment insurance registration declaration to the Social Security Institution (SGK). If the employer fails to submit the insurance registration declaration, punitive fines apply. Initially, the fine equals one minimum wage; if the declaration is not submitted within the legal period, the fine increases to two minimum wages.
Employees can easily check their insurance status online without visiting the SGK by using their e-Government (e-Devlet) password for SSK inquiry. Social security coverage varies by employment type: civil servants in the public sector are covered by the Pension Fund (Emekli Sandığı), while private-sector employees or self-employed business owners typically fall under BAĞ-KUR. Anyone with social security can use the e-Government SSK inquiry to see how long they have been insured and how many premium payment days they have. These details are accessible online, quickly and conveniently.
Those with social security are entitled to various social and health services, often at no cost. Through the e-Government SSK inquiry system, a person with coverage can receive examinations or surgeries free of charge at state hospitals, specialist state hospitals, state university hospitals, training and research hospitals, and family health centers. If they choose treatment at private health facilities, the cost depends on the level of insurance premium payments: some services may be fully covered, while others require the patient to pay a partial difference. The higher your insurance premium contributions, the lower the out-of-pocket cost at private providers. The same principle applies to prescription drugs: certain medications are fully covered by your social security, making them free for you, whereas others are only partially covered and require you to pay the remaining amount.
