Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez announced news that could please many people. The Minister indicated that reductions in electricity and natural gas prices are possible. He stated that if the downward trend in prices continues, a cut could be implemented in March.
Energy of the Century
“Turkey Century” is a document outlining the vision for the Turkey of the future. Described by the Minister as the compass for a strong and great Turkey, the plan is emphasized as a legacy for future generations and a key to success for the century. Dönmez highlighted that energy is the most important element in achieving this goal and stressed the importance of obtaining energy from domestic sources. He noted that a wide range of topics—especially Black Sea gas, renewable energy, boron and other minerals, nuclear power, and natural gas storage—are all issues that will shape the coming century.
New Discoveries
In addition to the well-known size of the Black Sea gas field, which can meet around 30 years of demand, recent discoveries have strengthened efforts to make the country’s energy supply domestic and national. Dönmez emphasized that these advances represent positive developments toward meeting Turkey’s energy needs.
Black Sea Gas Comes Online in March
Stating that all plans have been made to ensure energy independence as part of the Turkey Century vision, Minister Dönmez announced that Black Sea gas will be brought into service for the first time in March. When operating at full capacity, this production is expected to reduce Turkey’s gas imports by about a quarter and will also help diversify the country’s energy sources.
Turkish Engineers’ Success in Deep-Sea Drilling
Work to extract the Black Sea gas involved descending to depths of 2,200 meters to place pipelines. Because extraction required reaching such depths, advanced technological equipment was used. The Minister emphasized that these tools are locally produced and praised the success of Turkish engineers. They demonstrated their capabilities in deep-sea drilling to recover the Black Sea gas. This achievement marks a major step forward for Turkey’s progress in energy and will contribute to the Turkey Century vision.
