In Turkey’s current system, mandatory military service lasts for six months. Those who complete the six-month compulsory service may choose to extend their service voluntarily for an additional six months. Volunteers who extend their service receive a payment during this extended period.

A 2019 reform reduced mandatory military service from 12 months to six months. Under the new arrangement, those who complete the initial six months can opt to extend service by another six months. Payments to personnel who extend their service rose after the military pay increase implemented in 2023.

HOW MUCH SALARY IS PAID TO THOSE WHO EXTEND SERVICE BY 6 MONTHS?

Those who extend their six-month compulsory service for an additional six months receive regular salary payments and social insurance contributions at least at the level of the national minimum wage. Individuals who want to extend voluntarily and receive pay can submit their applications near the end of their initial six months of service.

Following the minimum wage increase set in 2023, payments for those who extend their military service were raised. From January 1, 2023, the compensation for volunteers was increased by 55 percent, bringing it to 8,500 TL. In addition, higher pay rates apply for personnel serving in border and eastern regions.

IS EXTENDING MILITARY SERVICE ADVANTAGEOUS?

Following the 2023 minimum wage increase, many young people choose to extend their service by six months to save money. In that respect, extending service can be advantageous. Those who extend receive payments amounting to at least 51,000 TL for six months. Assistance programs for needy military families also continue during this period.

There are additional benefits such as extra points for military student recruitment and state-paid social insurance contributions. Enlisted soldiers may, if they wish, apply to become 12-month contracted privates after completing a 6 + 6 month period, provided they meet application requirements. Competitive exams for promotion from contracted specialist noncommissioned officer positions also provide opportunities for advancement.
