In this piece we detail the Schengen visa, often regarded as one of the most valuable and widely applicable travel visas. How do you apply for a Schengen visa? Which documents are required? You will find answers to these and other frequently asked questions about conditions and fees below.
What is a Schengen Visa?
A Schengen visa permits travel within the 26 member states of the Schengen Area for stays of up to 90 days. With this visa you can travel freely among the member countries that participate in the Schengen agreement. It is the most commonly used visa for travel to Europe.
Warning: If your purpose is work, study, or long-term residence in Europe, a Schengen visa is not appropriate. You must apply for the national visa of the country you intend to stay in.

What is a Multiple-Entry Schengen Visa?
A multiple-entry Schengen visa allows repeated entry and exit from Schengen Area countries during its validity. It offers greater flexibility if you plan to visit multiple times or travel between Schengen states.
Note: Even with multiple entries permitted, you may not stay more than 90 days within any 180-day period.
How to Obtain a Schengen Visa
To apply for a Schengen visa you must submit an application online or book an appointment at the consulate or embassy of the country you plan to visit and apply in person.
How Long Does a Schengen Visa Take?
Processing time depends on the workload of the consulate where you apply, but typically takes around 4–5 days. This period may be shorter or longer depending on the consulate’s discretion.
There is no mandatory statutory processing time, and decisions are at the consulate’s discretion, so it is advisable to apply at least two weeks before your planned travel date.
How to Submit a Schengen Visa Application
There are two main ways to apply for a Schengen visa:
- Online: Many Schengen countries accept visa applications submitted electronically. Complete the online visa application form and follow the instructions for document submission and appointment scheduling.
- At the Consulate: Book an appointment with the consulate of the Schengen country you will visit and submit your application and supporting documents in person.
What Are the Schengen Visa Requirements?
Anyone who completes the required documents may apply for a Schengen visa. Whether the visa is granted, its duration, or any restrictions are decided by the issuing consulate.
You must not create the impression that you intend to remain in the Schengen Area illegally or stay permanently. If authorities suspect a risk of unlawful stay, your application may be refused. You should demonstrate that your trip is for tourism or short-term travel, typically with documents such as flight reservations and hotel bookings.
If your purpose of travel involves work, study, or other long-term plans in a Schengen country, the Schengen visa is not suitable. Apply instead for the national visa of the specific country you plan to stay in.
