Parliament Pauses Work: EYT Law Fails to Take Effect

After the devastating earthquake centered in Kahramanmaraş, ten provinces experienced widespread destruction. Thousands of people lost their lives, and the whole country mobilized to respond to the catastrophe. Parliamentary work was paused for one week due to the disaster. Interest remains high in the current status of the retirement-rights (EYT) bill that was expected to be submitted to the Assembly this week.

Developments on the EYT bill, closely followed by millions, were temporarily put on hold because of the earthquake. It is being investigated whether the bill, which was expected to reach the Grand National Assembly on Tuesday, will proceed as planned.

PARLIAMENTARY SESSIONS HALTED FOR ONE WEEK

Following one of the most painful earthquakes in the republic’s history, life across Turkey came almost to a standstill. With citizens mobilized and international aid requested, the EYT bill that was set to be considered in Parliament this week was postponed.

Parliamentary sessions were suspended for one week due to the earthquake. The latest developments on the EYT bill, which recently passed the Plan and Budget Committee, continue to be closely monitored. After completing parliamentary procedures, the bill would have come into force with the signature of President Erdoğan.

LOSSES FROM THE EARTHQUAKE CONTINUE

The February 6 earthquake centered in Kahramanmaraş caused significant loss of life and property across ten provinces. Reports of people still trapped under rubble continue to emerge. In response to the disaster, President Erdoğan declared a seven-day national mourning period.

The Speaker of the Grand National Assembly, Mustafa Şentop, noted that deputies and party members traveled to the affected areas to support relief efforts, which is why parliamentary work was suspended for a week. As a result, the EYT bill that was expected to be brought before the Assembly this week has been put on hold following the postponement of Grand Assembly sessions.

HAS THE EYT BILL BEEN POSTPONED?

With the Grand National Assembly suspending its work for one week, legislative processes were deferred. Accordingly, the EYT bill that was expected to be presented to the General Assembly on Tuesday has been postponed. Bills scheduled for consideration between February 6 and 10 will return to the agenda when parliamentary sessions resume after the one-week pause.
