Saudi Arabia Announces 2020 Hajj Decision: What Pilgrims Need to Know

Saudi Arabia Announces Hajj Decision for 2020

The long-awaited decision for 2020 has been announced. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Saudi Arabia will limit the Hajj pilgrimage for 2020 to residents within the country. Saudi authorities have stated that they will not accept Hajj applicants from abroad this year.

In an official written statement, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah noted that COVID-19 has spread to more than 180 countries and that confirmed cases worldwide have exceeded seven million. The ministry also reported that the number of deaths is approaching half a million. With no widely available vaccine or fully effective treatment yet in place, the ministry emphasized that maintaining physical distancing during large religious gatherings is not feasible and that such settings can facilitate rapid virus transmission.

No International Pilgrims Accepted Because of Coronavirus

Explaining the decision further, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah said that gatherings in the holy sites pose a significant public health risk. Earlier measures had already suspended Umrah visits to protect pilgrims and residents, a step welcomed by many Muslim-majority countries. Given the continuing spread of the virus, the ministry confirmed that for the health and safety of Muslims, Hajj participation in 2020 will be restricted to people already residing inside Saudi Arabia.

The ministry added that ongoing global transmission, crowded conditions inherent to Hajj rituals, and continued international travel risks, combined with rising global case counts, led to the decision to limit this year’s Hajj to domestic applicants only. This measure aims to protect both pilgrims and host communities during the pandemic.

Authorities emphasized that these steps are temporary and intended to preserve public health. The ministry will continue to monitor the global and local epidemiological situation and provide updates as conditions change. Pilgrims who had planned to travel from abroad are advised to stay informed through official channels regarding potential future arrangements and any guidance on travel or rescheduling.

While the 2020 Hajj will be markedly different from previous years, the ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding worshippers and ensuring that religious rites can be carried out as safely as possible under the circumstances. Further administrative details and support measures for resident pilgrims will be communicated by relevant Saudi authorities.
