April Inflation Figures Announced! Due to the coronavirus, a large portion of the population spent almost the entire month of April under quarantine measures. The inflation figures for April 2020 have been released: compared to April of the previous year, inflation rose by approximately 10.94%. Compared with March, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.85% in April. According to the latest data, garlic recorded the highest price increase in April, rising by 46.18%.
The second largest price increase in April was for onions, which rose by 37.50%. With garlic planting season approaching, stored garlic was sold off, driving prices higher. Although onion exports had been banned and the harvest has started, the new supply was not enough to lower onion prices.
How Did April’s Inflation Rate Affect Each Category?
April’s annual inflation rate rose by 10.94% compared to the same month last year. The product groups that experienced the smallest increases year-on-year are listed below.
- Clothing and Footwear: 4.90%
- Recreation and Culture: 4.91%
- Transportation: 5.54%
In contrast, the product groups that saw the largest year-on-year increases are:
- Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco: 31.32%
- Miscellaneous Goods and Services: 20.34%
- Housing: 14.52%
When examining main expenditure groups for the month of April, the categories that recorded declines are as follows:
- Communication: -1.23%
- Recreation and Culture: -0.67%
- Housing: -0.32%
On the other hand, the main expenditure groups that experienced the largest monthly increases in April are:
- Miscellaneous Goods and Services: 4.66%
- Clothing and Footwear: 4.08%
- Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages: 2.53%
Out of the 418 items covered by the index in April 2020, the average price of 87 items fell. For 61 items there was no change in the average price, while the average price increased for 270 items.
