European Border Crossings Opened to Migrants

Following the airstrike in Idlib, European border crossings have been opened to migrants. Authorities have announced that refugee communities in our country will be allowed to move toward Europe. Since the announcement, a heavy flow of migrants has begun toward European borders. Many refugees who had been waiting to migrate are now moving toward border checkpoints. In a latest statement, Turkish authorities said they will not prevent migrants from crossing to Europe by land or sea. The statement was summarized as: “Our refugee policy remains the same, but the situation on the ground is unsustainable — we can no longer hold back migrants.”

According to the update, if a new influx of refugees emerges from Idlib, officials will not intervene if those people seek to travel to Europe. The decision covers all groups of migrants wishing to head to European countries.

Activity Begins at Border Crossings

Activity at border crossings has begun. After the regime forces in Syria launched an airstrike targeting Turkish troops in Idlib, Turkey announced it will no longer prevent refugees who want to travel to EU countries. Upon hearing this, many migrants set out from Edirne en masse heading for Greece. In its statement regarding the airstrikes by regime forces on Turkish Armed Forces in rural Idlib, Turkey said it likely cannot absorb a fresh wave of refugees.

Breaking reports indicate that migrants have started streaming through the Edirne border crossing toward Europe. Word of the decision has prompted migrants to head for Edirne. Around 300 migrants on foot — including women and children — are continuing their march toward Greece. Carrying backpacks, groups of migrants from Syria, Iran, Iraq and Pakistan said they coordinated among themselves and headed toward Edirne to attempt crossing into Greece.

After the new decision on migrants, many displaced people across the country have begun moving toward border checkpoints. They are traveling by sea and by land, converging on various crossing points as they seek entry to EU countries.
